Voices of the Underground Railroad
A series of 10 vignettes about local people who were involved in the activities of the Underground Railroad in Delaware County during the era prior to the Civil War.
You will hear from:
~ Abolitionists like Ostrander’s William Cratty and Peru Township’s Phoebe Benedict
~ Runaway slave Asbury Parker’s narrative
~ Mary Frances (Alston) Austin, the last surviving freed slave to arrive in Delaware County
and many more
Reenacted by members of the Delaware County Historical Society’s Curriculum Support Committee. The program concludes with the music of fugitive slaves. You will learn some of the secret meanings embedded in the music.
